Christmas in New York: the tree, the Rockettes and the ball drop

Few cities wear Christmas as famously as New York. The tree at Rockefeller Center, the Rockettes at Radio City, skaters under the skyscrapers and the windows of Fifth Avenue make Midtown the most festive square mile in America, and the year ends with the ball dropping over Times Square.

The tree at Rockefeller Center

The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree arrives in early November and is lit in a televised ceremony, this year on Wednesday 2 December 2026, according to Rockefeller Center. Walk in from Fifth Avenue through the Channel Gardens, lined with illuminated herald angels, and the tree rises above the gilded Prometheus and the rink below.

Our advice: come early on a weekday morning or late at night for the clearest view, and skip the evening of the lighting itself unless you love a crowd.

Skating in Midtown

The Rink at Rockefeller Center, beneath the tree, is the most famous ice in the world; sessions are timed and booked through Rockefeller Center. A few blocks away, the Winter Village in Bryant Park pairs a large rink with rows of holiday shops behind the New York Public Library, from late October through the winter.

The Rockettes and the windows

The Christmas Spectacular starring the Radio City Rockettes runs from 4 November 2026 to 4 January 2027 at Radio City Music Hall, with 230 performances, the most in its history, according to the producers. The “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” has been part of the show since its debut in 1933.

Fifth Avenue’s department stores and flagships unveil their holiday windows in late November, and the stretch from Saks Fifth Avenue up to the Plaza is the classic December promenade.

Times Square & the Theater District

Midnight Mass at St Patrick’s

St Patrick’s Cathedral, across Fifth Avenue from Rockefeller Center, celebrates Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. Seats are by ticket, allocated to non-parishioners through an online lottery run by the cathedral each summer; the other Christmas Masses are open to all, and you should arrive early.

New Year’s Eve in Times Square

The ball has dropped over Times Square to welcome the New Year since 31 December 1907, with a pause only in the wartime years of 1942 and 1943. Viewing on the street is first come, first served, and the pens fill from the afternoon.

Our advice: unless you want the full experience, watch the countdown from a hotel or restaurant with a view, or book a New Year’s Eve dinner and join the city as it spills into the streets after midnight.
