The back story

About From JFK, LaGuardia and Newark into Manhattan

New York has three main airports: JFK and LaGuardia in Queens and Newark Liberty in New Jersey. Each has a rail or bus link and taxis at the kerb.

From JFK

AirTrain JFK runs from the terminals to Jamaica, for the subway and the Long Island Rail Road, and to Howard Beach for the A train. It costs $8.75, paid by contactless card, phone or OMNY card when you enter or leave at Jamaica or Howard Beach (jfkairport.com). From Jamaica, the LIRR reaches Penn Station or Grand Central Madison.

From LaGuardia

The Q70 LaGuardia Link bus runs from Terminals B and C to Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Avenue and 74th Street–Broadway for the subway, and the airport says no fare is charged. Or take the LIRR from Woodside (laguardiaairport.com).

A yellow taxi from JFK to anywhere in Manhattan is a flat $70 plus surcharges.

From Newark

AirTrain Newark links the terminals to Newark Liberty International Airport Station for NJ Transit and Amtrak trains to Penn Station. It costs $8.75 to enter or leave the station; Terminal A has no direct AirTrain stop, so allow time for the walk or shuttle (newarkairport.com).

Taxis and car services

Yellow taxis charge a flat $70 between JFK and Manhattan, plus a $0.50 MTA surcharge, a $1.00 improvement surcharge, a $5.00 weekday rush-hour surcharge (4pm to 8pm), a $2.50 congestion surcharge and a $0.75 congestion relief zone toll where it applies. LaGuardia trips are metered plus a $5 surcharge; Newark trips are metered plus a $20 surcharge and tolls (nyc.gov/tlc). Uber, Lyft and licensed car services also serve all three airports.

Our advice: if you land at rush hour with luggage, a taxi from JFK is predictable; otherwise the AirTrain and train are quicker.
