The back story

About Driving in Manhattan: the congestion toll and parking

Since January 2025, cars entering Manhattan’s Congestion Relief Zone, at and below 60th Street, pay a daily toll, and parking is scarce and expensive.

The toll

Passenger cars with E-ZPass pay $9 at peak times (5am to 9pm on weekdays, 9am to 9pm at weekends) and $2.25 overnight, once a day, to enter the zone south of and including 60th Street. The FDR Drive, the West Side Highway and the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel connections to West Street are excluded. The toll is due to rise to $12 in 2028 and $15 in 2031 (mta.info).

Parking

Street parking is limited and strictly enforced; garages charge by the hour.

Most visitors never need a car in Manhattan.

Our advice

Use the subway, taxis and your feet in Manhattan, and hire a car only for day trips, collecting it at an airport.
