About Chelsea, the Meatpacking District and the High Line: the back story

Once full of warehouses and meat markets, the far West Side from Gansevoort Street to 34th Street is now one of the liveliest parts of Manhattan.

The Meatpacking District

The Whitney Museum stands at the south end of the High Line, with Pastis and Little Island close by.

The High Line

The elevated park runs north above the streets to Hudson Yards.

The High Line turned an old freight railway into one of the city’s favourite walks.

Chelsea

Chelsea Market fills a block on Ninth Avenue, Hotel Chelsea stands on West 23rd Street, and Chelsea Piers has sports by the river.

Our advice: walk the High Line north in the morning and have lunch at Chelsea Market.
