About Lower Manhattan and the Financial District: the back story

Lower Manhattan is where New York began, from the Battery and Wall Street to the World Trade Center, with Chinatown and the Lower East Side just to the north-east.

The World Trade Center

Wall Street

Trinity Church, Federal Hall and the New York Stock Exchange are on and around Wall Street; Delmonico’s, Crown Shy and Saga are nearby.

From the Battery, the Statue of Liberty is a short ferry ride away.

The harbour

Ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island leave from the Battery, and the Staten Island Ferry from Whitehall.

The Lower East Side

Katz’s, Russ & Daughters and the Tenement Museum keep the Lower East Side’s history alive.

Our advice: start early at the Statue of Liberty, then the 9/11 Memorial in the afternoon.
