About Times Square and the Theater District: the back story

The Theater District around Times Square holds most of Broadway’s theatres, from the New Amsterdam on 42nd Street to the Neil Simon on 52nd.

Times Square

Times Square is where Broadway crosses Seventh Avenue, under giant screens. The TKTS booth sells discount theatre tickets, and the Ball drops here on New Year’s Eve.

The theatres

Chicago at the Ambassador, The Lion King at the Minskoff, Wicked at the Gershwin and Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers are among the long runs.

Most Broadway theatres are within a ten-minute walk of Times Square.

Before and after the show

Eat at Gallaghers on West 52nd Street, then hear jazz at Birdland on West 44th Street.

Our advice: arrive 30 minutes before curtain-up; the streets around the theatres are crowded just before shows.
