About The Upper East Side and Museum Mile: the back story

The Upper East Side runs from Central Park to the East River, with Museum Mile along upper Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue’s boutiques one block east.

Museum Mile

The Met at 82nd Street, the Frick at 70th, the Neue Galerie at 86th, the Guggenheim at 89th and Cooper Hewitt at 91st all face Central Park or stand a few steps from it.

Madison Avenue

Hermès, Ralph Lauren and many designer boutiques line Madison Avenue, with cafés such as Sant Ambroeus between them.

Upper Fifth Avenue is lined with museums.

The hotels

The Carlyle, the Mark, the Lowell and the Surrey are some of New York’s most elegant hotels, with Bemelmans Bar and Café Carlyle for an evening out.

Our advice: pair one big museum with a walk in the park; don’t try to see three in a day.
