About Greenwich Village and the West Village: the back story

Greenwich Village and the West Village are a maze of tree-lined streets, with Washington Square Park at their heart and the East Village to the east.

Washington Square

Washington Square Park, with its arch and fountain, is the Village’s heart.

Jazz

The Village Vanguard, the Blue Note and Smalls present jazz every night.

Jazz in a Village basement is a New York rite of passage.

Food and drink

Via Carota, Carbone, Minetta Tavern and Joe’s Pizza are Village favourites, and the White Horse Tavern has been a writers’ bar for generations.

The East Village

McSorley’s, Veselka, PDT and Death & Co are in the East Village.

Our advice: book an early dinner, then the late set at a jazz club.
