The back story

About Billionaires’ Row explained: the back story

Along West 57th Street, a run of very tall, very slender residential towers has risen since the 2010s, looking north over Central Park. Their nickname, Billionaires’ Row, reflects the price of their apartments.

The towers

Central Park Tower at 225 West 57th Street (Extell), 111 West 57th Street (JDS), One57 at 157 West 57th Street (Extell) and 220 Central Park South (Vornado) are the best-known. Nordstrom’s flagship occupies the base of Central Park Tower.

Why here?

West 57th Street sits just south of Central Park, so towers there can look over the park. Developers combined small sites and bought unused development rights from neighbouring buildings to build very high.

Supertall, super-slim: the towers rise from small sites to catch the view of the park.

Park Avenue

432 Park Avenue, a little to the east, is another of the city’s slender supertall residential towers, and the Towers of the Waldorf Astoria are the residences above the restored hotel.

Our advice: see them from the Lake in Central Park or from Top of the Rock. We do not publish prices.
